Hit the Trails!

As 2023 approaches its close, the hiking season in Nelson is wrapping up. With limited opportunities left to hit the trails, now is the ideal time for outdoor enthusiasts to make the most of the remaining days.

Fall hiking offers a unique experience. The changing foliage presents picturesque views, making each trek a visually rewarding endeavor. However, this season also brings forth specific challenges to be aware of:

Temperature Variations: The cool fall temperatures can be refreshing during Pulpit ascents, reducing fatigue and overheating. But, as you descend, and activity levels drop, it can become considerably colder. Pack an extra layer of clothing and expect the temperature to be coldere up top!

Footwear Matters: The trails during this time can be damp and potentially slippery, especially in shaded areas or after rainfall. It’s crucial to wear boots with excellent traction to prevent slips and potential injuries.

Daylight Hours: With days getting shorter, it’s essential to manage hiking time efficiently. Starting treks early is advisable, ensuring ample daylight for both ascent and descent. This is especially true for trails like Pulpit Rock. Being on a trail after sunset introduces navigational challenges, and temperatures can drop quickly, making it potentially unsafe.

Know Your Limits: While exploring and taking on new challenges is part of the hiking experience, it’s essential to assess the trail’s difficulty and ensure it aligns with your expertise. Always keep an eye on the time, and remember: turning back is okay.
